Del. David E. Yancey, R-Newport News, won a random drawing this morning to break a tie in the critical House of Delegates 94th District election. This puts Republicans on track to keep a 51-49 majority in the House of Delegates and avoid a power-sharing arrangement with Democrats.
Yancey held a 10-vote lead over Democrat Shelly Simonds in unofficial results tallied on election night, but a December 19th recount showed Simonds with a one-vote win.
The outcome changed again during a court hearing on December 20th, when a three-judge panel chose to review a single disputed ballot and count it for Yancey, creating the tie.
There is a chance that Simonds may seek another recount.
