February 9, 2017 Update

February 9, 2017

Dear VTCA Member,

We need your help.  We all know how dangerous work zones can be for our members’ workers. The biggest danger is accidents caused by distracted drivers.

This year, VTCA teamed up with DRIVE SMART to support legislation that would prohibit drivers from texting or otherwise using a handheld personal communications device while operating a motor vehicle in a highway work zone. The legislation HB 1606 (http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?171+sum+HB1606) was introduced by Delegate Ron Villanueva, Chairman of the House Transportation Committee. HB 1606 passed the House and will be heard by the Senate Transportation Committee Wednesday, February 15th.

Unfortunately, many members of that committee are now saying they will oppose HB 1606 “because it is too inconvenient for drivers.”  REALLY? It is too inconvenient for drivers to use Bluetooth or put down their phone for 5 minutes while they navigate through a work zone? RIDICULOUS.

PLEASE take 15 minutes and call or email members of the Senate Transportation Committee and let them know you support HB 1606.
