On Friday, the Senate Finance Committee voted 10-5 to advance SB 583 to the full Senate. The bill, introduced by Senator Emmett Hanger (R-Augusta), would create and fund the Western Virginia Transportation Commission. The gas tax would be raised in jurisdictions along the I-81 corridor and the money would go to make improvement along the corridor. http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?181+ful+SB583S1+pdf. The bill would pump millions of dollars into making much needed improvements along the entire I-81 corridor.

VTCA has strongly supported the bill and NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP. The Senate will take up the bill today or tomorrow and we need you to reach out to your Senator and ask them to VOTE YES ON SB 583.

The Senate Finance Committee vote was:

YEAS–Norment, Hanger, Howell, Saslaw, Lucas, Ruff, Wagner, Carrico, Barker, Dance–10.

NAYS–McDougle, Vogel, Obenshain, Dunnavant, Stuart–5.

Unfortunately, two Senators whose Districts include the I-81 Corridor, (Obenshain and Vogel) did NOT vote for the bill.
