Support and Challenge for Construction Leaders Workshop

Event Details
Ask a superintendent what is costing him this week and he will rarely say concrete. He will say the foreman who stopped raising problems early, the PM who checks every detail and gets nothing but compliance back, or the good hand who left in June without ever saying why.
Those are not personality problems. They are calibration problems. Every leader brings some mix of support and challenge to the people around them, and the mix decides what comes back. Most of us bring plenty of one and not enough of the other, and we cannot see which is which from the inside.
This in-person workshop uses the Support and Challenge Matrix from GiANT Worldwide to make that mix visible, then spends four hours putting it to work. You will find your own default under pressure, see the culture each style produces on a crew, connect your natural leadership voice to the side of the matrix you have been avoiding, and practice the specific behaviors that move a relationship in the right direction. You will leave with one named person, one named adjustment, and a commitment for the week ahead.
Members who joined the Dig and Develop webinar on this tool will recognize the map. This session is where you walk the ground. Prior attendance is helpful but not required.
Seats are limited to 30. Lunch will be provided.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify which of the four leadership styles they default to under pressure, and with which people.
- Describe the culture each style produces on a crew and the cost each one carries in turnover, safety, and rework.
- Connect their natural leadership voice to the side of the matrix that comes easily and the side that takes deliberate work.
- Apply specific support behaviors, including active listening, removing obstacles, and delegating real responsibility.
- Apply specific challenge behaviors, including setting a clear standard, holding accountability without shame, and giving direct feedback.
- Use the four quadrants as shared language with their own team without it becoming a personnel discussion.
- Leave with a written plan naming one relationship, one adjustment, and a one-week commitment.
Who Should Attend
Project managers, superintendents, foremen and crew leads, project engineers, safety and quality staff, and anyone who will be handed people to lead in the next two years. Companies get the most out of it by sending two or three people who work together, because they come back with shared language rather than a private insight.
