Aggregates Greenfielding: Chaney's Success Story

Member and Industry News,

Crushed stone, sand, and gravel are essential to the roads, buildings, and infrastructure that support our communities. Maintaining a reliable supply of these materials requires ongoing investment in both existing operations and new aggregate sources.

Growing communities require a dependable supply of construction aggregates. Developing new greenfield quarries is one of the industry's most challenging undertakings, involving extensive planning, permitting, investment, and construction before production can begin.

The greenfield development process generally includes the following steps:

  • Identifying and evaluating potential sites based on geological resources, access, and market demand.
  • Working with local governments, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders to plan, permit, and gain support for the project.
  • Validating the business case by assessing production potential, capital investment requirements, operating costs, and market pricing.
  • Designing and constructing infrastructure, including quarry development, processing facilities, roads, utilities, and support buildings.
  • Starting operations and developing the initial mining area to begin supplying aggregate products to the market.

A recent example of successful greenfield development comes from VTCA member Chaney Enterprises, which recently announced the startup phase of its new Stony Creek Quarry. This project represents years of planning, permitting, engineering, and construction efforts to bring a new source of high-quality aggregates to the region.
