VA Tech Publishes Research on Quarry By-Products

Member and Industry News,

The Virginia Tech Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Materials Science and Engineering has recently published their “Comparisons of Quarry By-Products as a Partial Replacement of Portland Cement in Pastes and Mortars” research paper.

From the Abstract - Quarry by-products (QB), including screenings, pond fines, and baghouse fines, present a significant surplus, since they are not significantly utilized in other markets and industries. This study explores the use of seven different QBs as direct replacements for limestone powder in Portland limestone cement for paste and mortar applications. All QBs were found to be non-pozzolanic; however, they may still be of use in other portland cement applications.

Dr. Alex Brand has been the liaison connecting Virginia’s Aggregate Producers with VA Tech Materials Science & Engineering research. VTCA’s aggregate producers assisted this research by providing QB samples.
