VDOT Sets December Target to Launch "LaneAware" Platform
VDOT is moving forward with the long-anticipated replacement of LCAMS, and members who use the system should begin preparing now. In a recent update to system users, VDOT confirmed that LCAMS — along with the aging VaTraffic Planned Events system — will be retired in favor of a new platform called LaneAware, with a statewide go-live targeted for the first week of December.
For contractors, LaneAware is designed to be a meaningful upgrade. VDOT says the new system will deliver a streamlined point of entry for contractors, modernized functionality, improved system performance, and a revalidated user access structure that aligns the platform with the agency's security requirements.
After an initial February launch target was deferred, VDOT completed additional User Acceptance Testing in June to validate critical bug fixes. The agency now considers LaneAware development complete and the system production ready. Additionally, VDOT has acknowledged that the industry is in the midst of peak construction season and pushed the launch to early December accordingly.
Because the legacy LCAMS and VaTraffic Planned Events systems are near the end of their serviceable life, VDOT has flagged the possibility of an earlier-than-planned migration. The vendor is working to keep the legacy sites online and stable, but if either system becomes inoperable before the December cutover, VDOT may be required to deploy LaneAware sooner.
Training will be mandatory. LaneAware training will be published on VDOT University soon, and instructions will be sent to all current LCAMS and VaTraffic Planned Events users once it is live. Members should note that all users must complete LaneAware training before they will be granted access to the new system.
